If i was to purchase a second style, and allow members to have the choice, would xenbase need to be uploaded again for the second style to work or would the original installation of XB control both styles?

Nope!

Your setup will be like this to keep it easy:

• XenBase
  • Splash
    • Splash Child Style
  • Core
    • Core Child Style

Then you'll just make your edits on the child styles and when it comes time to upgrade you can just upgrade XenBase by itself.
