Is there a way to accomplish the second image, where the selected button (and hover button) is similar connected from top and bottom?

I think that's our Bolt style. You may need to add some custom CSS to remove the padding:

#XF .p-nav { padding-top: 0; padding-bottom: 0; }

Then you'll probably want to go back and increase the height of the tabs (Style properties -> Header and navigation)
