Hey, I think I found a pretty decent solution for us :)

Code:
.threadStarter .username:before {
        font-family: FontAwesome;
        content: "\f139  ";
    }
For anyone who's interested, this adds a font awesome "circle chevron up" icon before the OP's username:

Does anyone know how to put an "alt tag" on the FA icon? Such that when user hovers over the icon it'd say "Thread Starter" ?

You could do it with a CSS tooltip maybe, let me see if I can find the code in a bit. Otherwise you'll need to edit the template and add the icon and tooltip class.

Edit: Nevermind, the above option doesn't work too well: if anyone "likes" the original post, all the like usernames in the like bar have the starter icon on them as well. Will keep trying for a better method.

Add an extra class specific for the user block:

Code:
.threadStarter .messageUserBlock .username:before {
  font-family: FontAwesome;
  content: "\f139  ";
  }

Thanks Russ, that works great. One last issue with this, is that every username in every message of a conversation has the threadstarter icon...

Interesting.. I'll need to look at the conditional, but for now CSS:
Code:
.thread_view .threadStarter .messageUserBlock .username:before {
  font-family: FontAwesome;
  content: "\f139  ";
  }
That should be specific enough :)
