On the XF default style, once you have chosen Light or Day, the menu auto-closes. On flat Awesome it awkwardly stays visible and in focus, and you have to click elsewhere to dismiss it.

So... it would appear this is the result of having multiple style variation locations. I've submitted it as a "bug" to XenForo hoping they'll address it. Basically, their JS is asking to update the first menu it finds for the style variation, not ALL the menus.
Not really a bug necessarily, but I'm hoping they can tweak their JS to make it a little more flexible.
We like having the style variation menu in other places outside of the footer navigation area. Some areas we've done have been the user dropdown, off-canvas, next to the search icon in the nav. I've realized though the JS appears to really only properly work if the footer one is completely...
